Release week April 2, 2007: North Carolina Standards· Social Studies: Students will label and summarize current events as international, national, state or municipal. · Social Studies: Students will research and write a vacation travel plan to North Carolina. · Social Studies: Students will print and display the motto of many of the states in America and make a motto for their classroom. Activities1. Use the News: Are there any current events about state issues? Find, summarize and label newspaper current events as international, national, state or municipal.
2. Do some research on tourism in North Carolina. Then write a travel plan describing several places you would like to visit. What are the destinations? Why did you choose them? Is there an admission cost? Choose at least one educational spot (e.g., museum), one entertainment area and one sports or outdoor-activity location.
3. North Carolina's motto is: Esse quam videri (To be, rather than to seem). What does this mean to you? What language is the original writing? Look up the mottos for other states and write them/print them on paper to hang in your classroom. Positive quotations are meant to inspire us to be better citizens. Do you have a school motto? Can you make one for your classroom?
World of Wonder meets many state educational standards. This guide helps teachers identify standards and related activities generally intended for grade 6, but teachers can modify activities to the appropriate grade level.
