Release week March 11, 2007: Eastern Nations Standards - Social Studies: Students will compare “rich” clothes to “poor” ones.
- History: Students will compare ancient Eastern clothes with modern fashions.
- Geography: Students will locate the appropriate countries matching the costume origins.
Activities
- Use the News: What’s the difference between expensive clothes and cheap ones? Are they made differently? Do they look different? Cut out examples of the two kinds of clothes from pictures and advertisements in the newspaper. Compare the two categories and discuss the differences.
- Have the clothes from ancient Eastern nations changed much compared to current fashions? Search for photographs that show people from any of the mentioned Eastern nations and compare their clothes with the tradional fashions from ancient times. Are there any similarities? How would you describe the similarities and differences?
- Match the cultural clothes from each country shown in this WoW comic (and last week’s) with their geographical place in the world. Cut out one or two from each country and glue them to an appropriately sized map or map outline. The map could be printed or hand drawn/traced. This activity can be continued with the rest of this WoW costume series.
World of Wonder meets many state educational standards. This guide helps teachers identify standards and related activities generally intended for grade 6, but teachers can modify activities to the appropriate grade level.
