Release week March 4, 2007: What People Wore

Standards

  • Social Studies: Students will cut out photographs of modern “costumes.”
  • History: Students will identify and match the costumes with the proper place and status.
  • Language Arts: Students will create a puppet play with the costumed cutouts.

Activities

  • Use the News: Cut photos of people out of the newspaper with various “costumes.” Are they business people, poor people, athletes, doctors, construction workers, etc.? Make a poster with labels similar to the WoW article.

  • Who’s who? Set the figures up without labels and try to identify where they came from and whether they are wealthy or poor. This activity can be continued and expanded with each of the four parts to this costume series.

  • Choose some of the costumed characters to cut out and mount on Popsicle sticks. They can be used to present a simple puppet play. What would people from these ancient times say to each other? Write a brief dialogue between them, serious or funny. Backgrounds and a puppet stage frame can be made with paper and cardboard boxes, if desired.

World of Wonder meets many state educational standards. This guide helps teachers identify standards and related activities generally intended for grade 6, but teachers can modify activities to the appropriate grade level.
