Release week Feb. 12, 2007:  Germany

Standards

·        Social Studies: Students will share newspaper articles and ideas about how Germany affects today’s world.

·        History: Students will report on a castle from Germany or create a replica.

·        Language Arts: Students will make a list of “English/German” words we use.

Activities

1.     Use the News: Germany is still an important country in today’s world.  Read the newspaper to learn what is happening in Germany today and how it is affecting the world.  Many products, cars, electronics, etc., are produced there.

2.     Lichtenstein Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle are just two interesting castles in Germany.  Choose one of the many German castles and report on its history and design.  Alternatively, you could make a model of one of the castles.  Materials such as blocks, cardboard, clay, even Lego blocks could be used for the construction.  Start with basic shapes and then add detail depending on your grade level.

3.     The German word “akkord” is the basis for our word “accord” and “accordion.”  Research individually, and then make a class list of words we use today that originally came from a German word. The Web site http://germanenglishwords.com/rlga.htm will help you. Click on a letter to see a list of “English/German” words starting with that letter.

World of Wonder meets many state educational standards.  This guide helps teachers identify standards and related activities generally intended for grade 6, but teachers can modify activities to the appropriate grade level.
