Release week Dec. 17, 2006:  Glaciers

Standards

  • Science: Students will locate glaciers on continents in the current news.
  • Science: Students will make model glaciers.
  • Science: Students will create an ice-cream glacier and observe various characteristics of glacier movement.

Activities

  • Use the News:  How many different continents does the current news come from?  Choose one of the continents in the news and research to find a glacier located there.  Record the information (a picture if possible) and present it to the class with the related new article.

  • Use clay, plasticine, flour paste, papier-mache, etc. to sculpt a model of a glacier.  First, decide on the type of glacier and draw an outline of the glacial area.  Are there mountains?  Where is the end or “ice front?”  Where is the beginning or accumulation zone?  A thick cardboard or wood base is useful.  Label the type of glacier and the various zones.

  • How is a glacier like ice cream?  Use the experiment on this Web page to create a glacier model and eat it!  http://tvl1.geo.uc.edu/ice/other/resource/Recipe.html
