Release week Dec. 3, 2006: Periodic Table of the Elements

Standards

  • Science: Students will identify examples of elements in products mentioned in the newspaper.
  • Science: Students will test their knowledge of the elements by making puzzles about them.
  • Science: Students will diagram and summarize facts about an element on a poster.

Activities

  • Use the News: After you have become familiar with the names of many of the elements, find examples of products made with these elements in the newspaper. You will probably find several metals, gases and other elements (calcium, for example) in things such as cars, refrigerators and food.

  • Make a crossword puzzle out of the interesting words defined in this WoW comic. Even the element abbreviations could be used. Helium – He, or “The gas used to fill balloons” – Helium (or He). Photocopy and exchange your puzzles with classmates.

  • Make a poster of one of the elements from the Periodic Table. Choose one nobody else has chosen. Research what the element is and what a diagram of its protons, neutrons and electrons would look like. Draw this and give examples of what the element can be used for.

World of Wonder meets many state educational standards. This guide helps teachers identify standards and related activities generally intended for grade 6, but teachers can modify activities to the appropriate grade level.
