Release week Nov. 27, 2006: Making Paper

Standards

·        Science: Students will hunt for various uses of paper shown in a newspaper.

·        Science: Students will compare writing on paper to typing on a computer.

·        Industrial Arts: Students will watch a video about papermaking.

Activities

1.     Use the News: The newspaper itself is a product made from paper. What other uses are there of paper? This WoW comic lists many of them. Have a scavenger hunt through the newspaper and especially through any advertising flyers included in your paper for examples of products made with, or using, paper.

 2.     Do you think anything will ever replace paper? Why or why not? Will computers/digital media replace it? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both using paper and typing on a computer? Do a comparison in your class discussion.

3.     Watch professionals make Japanese handmade paper in this video. There are a few other videos about making paper available here, too. Notice how fine the paper pulp is compared to pulp you might chop up in a food processor. If you decide to make your own paper, experiment with all kinds of materials for the pulp. Yours may not be smooth and fine enough for writing paper, but it can be great for wrapping presents or small sheets of stationery. Even lint from the clothes dryer can provide some interesting results. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHGw8cGFu5Q
