Activities

  • Use the News: Some areas of fishing have become controversial because the fish are becoming scarce and the local fishermen are losing their livelihood. Look for articles in the newspaper about U.S. fisheries, and discuss the problems and possible solutions. Is there a way to save the fish populations and the jobs of fishermen?

  • What’s inside a fish? Use the plans at this Web site to guide a class dissection of a trout or salmon. The diagram on WoW comic will help you identify external parts. You may want to research books or the Internet for pictures and diagrams of the internal parts before performing the dissection. http://www.northcoast.com/~fishhelp/edu_f/dissect.htm%6c

  • Fish can be a healthy part of our diet. Have a fish-tasting class in which trout and salmon, as well as other fish, are cooked and brought to class for everyone to sample. Include a picture of the live fish you are serving, and see if your classmates can guess what its name is.

World of Wonder meets many state educational standards. This guide helps teachers identify standards and related activities generally intended for grade 6, but teachers can modify activities to the appropriate grade level.
