Newspapers In Education

NIE or Newspapers in Education is the use of the newspaper as an additional "textbook" and an invaluable classroom resource. The newspaper can be used to provide lessons in basic reading, mathematics, politics, science, social studies, geography and critical thinking. NIE can be carried out at all levels of education and the lessons can be designed to tie in with the national school curriculum.

The Medicine Hat News' own Newspaper in Education department is proud to support students and educators by offering an extensive selection of educational experiences and resource packages.

Class Sets of Newspapers
The Medicine Hat News offers class sets of Newspapers to local area schools at a nominal education rate. Sign up for our "Connect with Kids" Program and get paired up with a local business sponsor to receive your class sets FREE of charge. Click here to register.

Education Curriculum
NIE provides educators the tools to best use the "Living Textbook". Handy tips, ideas and scavenger hunts for each Grade level. Teacher's Guides for both the World of Wonder and the weekly Serial Stories, and a wide range of Curriculum Themed Kits (click here to see the complete list). NIE has the information and the resources to enable you to teach any subject, in new and interesting real-life ways.

The Library Special
Of particular interest to libraries, resouce centres, ESL classes, home schoolers, continuing education and other specialized educational programs, the Newspaper in Education department offers daily delivery of the Medicine Hat News throughout the academic year at a special Education rate. Workshops
As part of our commitment to support educators, the Newspaper in Education department offers workshops free of charge. These "hands-on" workshops provide training on using the newspaper as a teaching tool. To request a workshop, contact our Newspaper in Education Coordinator.
